  • Party Guide for Your Dog's Birthday Party and Gotcha Day

We all know your pups deserve to be treated like royalty, especially on their special day. So, why not throw them an awesome birthday party they'll bark about for years? Follow this step-by-step party guide on how to throw the ultimate dog birthday party and gotcha day. Get ready to fetch some fun and create unforgettable memories for you and your pup! Step 1: Choose the Perfect Date & Venue First, choose a date that works for you and your doggy guest list. Weekends are typically ideal and remember to check the weather forecast. We picked a local dog park, Los Angeles State Historic Park, but wherever you choose to celebrate, make sure it's a safe and dog-friendly space. Step 2: Create a Guest List Compile a list of your pup's closest pals (and their humans, of course). Keep in mind that a manageable group size is key to a successful dog party. Make sure to invite people and pups that your dog gets along with. You don't want any "ruff" moments, so keep it friendly. Step 3: Send Out Invitations Pick a theme and design invites with that in mind. Add a cute photo of your pup and include the date, time, location, and a little note inviting fellow dog-loving friends and their fur babies to join the fun. Don't forget to ask guests to RSVP so you can plan accordingly. Step 4: Puppy-Proof the Party Area Safety first! Make sure the party space is secure free of hazards, and that all the furry guests are comfortable. Remove toxic plants or substances, and keep trash cans out of paw's reach. Step 5: Decorate Like a Pro Deck out the party area with your chosen theme. We went with a luxury picnic theme (thanks to Pinterest) and even got a teepee to go with it. Keep decorations dog-safe – avoid small items that could become choking hazards. Don't forget to have plenty of fresh water available for your furry guests and consider any dietary restrictions. Step 6: Dog Menu Food is a highlight of any party! Because it's a luxury picnic theme, I had a table full of my favorite treats, from chews to freeze-dried jerky to cookies with my name on it, ensuring plenty for everyone to share. And what's a birthday without a cake? I had a custom-made cake from Paw Mentality with my name on it in my favorite flavors - bacon and cheddar. For the humans, keep it simple with finger foods and refreshments. Step 7: Organize Fun Activities Keep your guests entertained with dog-friendly activities. Because it was a small group with almost all dog parents familiar with each other, it ended up with parents catching up with each other while pups ate and sniffed butts with friends. I can't say my furry guests had any problem with that. Also, note that Los Angeles State Historic Park doesn't have a dog park / designated off-leash area so please consider that if you have a more active pup. Step 8: Doggy Bags Send your guests home with a little something, like doggy bags filled with treats and toys. It's a great way to say "thank you for coming" in the most dog-friendly way. You can also have to-go boxes and bags available so guests can take home an extra slice of cake or a piece of treats from your party. Step 9: Capture the Moments Designate a "pup-arazzi" or DIY a photo booth with props for adorable photo ops. You can also hire a pet photographer to capture all the adorable moments of your dog's special day. I had a photographer and videographer from Pet Shot Studios to make sure we didn't miss any cute faces and I even wore a GoPro to capture my doggy perspective. Share the photos with your guests afterward so everyone can relive the tail-wagging memories. Step 10: Safety First Last but definitely not least, prioritize safety throughout the party. Keep an eye on the pups to ensure they play nicely and be prepared for potential doggie disagreements. One thing I like about this park is that we had plenty of space to sit down and quietly enjoy our food. I have resource-guarding issues, so it was beneficial that I was not overwhelmed nor felt the need to protect my food. And, of course, clean up after your party! With a bit of planning and a lot of love, you'll create a paw-ty that your dog (and all your furry friends) will remember forever. So, let's get this celebration started and give your pup the birthday they deserve! Party on, pet parents! Calvin 🐾

  • Is a Miniature Schnauzer Right for You?

Are you thinking about getting a schnauzer because you can't get enough of our majestic beards, bushy brows, and those adorable "resting schnauzer faces"? Let me tell you a bit about us to see if a miniature schnauzer is the perfect match for you. My human didn't specifically set out to get a schnauzer. She just wanted a dog. But when she narrowed it down to needing a hypoallergenic pal for her apartment, here I am! It was love at first sight for her and after getting a burger patty on our first ride home, I was pretty smitten too. But, she quickly realized she didn't know much about us schnauzers, especially our bold personalities. It's been quite the ride, full of learning and adapting on both sides. Meet the Miniature Schnauzer: Could I Be Your Next Best Friend? Today, we'll focus on miniature schnauzers like me. We schnauzers sport a variety of colors - salt and pepper, black and silver and solid black, as recognized by the AKC. You'll also spot us in white, liver, and parti colors. Originating from Germany, bred primarily for farm work as ratters, our name derives from the German word "schnauze," meaning snout or muzzle. We pride ourselves on our intelligence, loyalty, and hypoallergenic coats. Despite being the smallest of the schnauzer breeds, we have the biggest egos. Our high energy levels demand ample exercise, from squirrel patrols to acting as vigilant guard dogs. Though we're generally sociable, our personalities sometimes lead us into confrontations, especially with larger dogs. While some say we're great with kids, I'm more reserved due to my limited early interactions with them. But give me a crowd of adults, and I'm all about soaking up the love and attention. Our devotion is deep, sometimes to the point of being a bit clingy, but it just means life with us is full of excitement and affection. Matching the Schnauzer Energy: Are You Up for the Challenge? Schnauzers have two modes – 'Let's go on an adventure' and 'Let's go on another adventure!' Despite my current "chonky" appearance, I'm surprisingly agile, especially when chasing squirrels. Hiking is a big yes for me, and while swimming isn't my forte, you'll find me having a blast with paddle boarding and kayaking. And fetch? I'm all in for a marathon session – just keep that ball coming, or you'll hear about it. It doesn't matter if you live in an apartment like we do or have a house with a yard. We're pretty flexible. Just a heads up, we'll be taking over the prime real estate like the couch and bed. Don't worry. We're generous, so we'll share it with you. We also like to guard the window and patio, ensuring everyone respects our territory.  I'm totally here for the party scene, and if you've seen my Instagram @sweetlifeofcalvin, you know I'm a party animal. Literally. But really, what gets me going is all the attention from people. Heading out, meeting folks, and snagging all the head scratches I can get – that's my idea of a good time. Early socialization is vital to developing a charming personality. Grooming and Care Preparing for a schnauzer means adopting a grooming routine that rivals yours. Yep, that iconic beard and our standout eyebrows need regular trims to keep us looking sharp. Personally, I'm all about that puppy cut life – senior dog or not, it just makes life easier without the constant beard grooming hassle. But if you're aiming for that classic schnauzer style, brace yourself for regular groomer visits every 4-6 weeks to keep us looking our best and it's not cheap. Even though we're not big shedders, expect to spend some quality time brushing, combing, and doing a bit of coat stripping to keep our fur in check. Understanding the Schnauzer Commitment We make sure our voices are heard, whether it's alerting you to the mailman or eagerly anticipating dinner. But if we suddenly quiet down, that's your cue to be concerned; a silent schnauzer is something out of the ordinary and might be a sign something's up. Training a schnauzer is pretty much like trying to make a deal with a clever little kid who knows exactly how to push your buttons. We're super smart and get what you're asking us to do, but sometimes, just for kicks, we act like we don't have a clue. Treats are very important. If there's a treat in it for me, I'm all in—showing off tricks, zooming through agility courses, you name it. But if you're out of treats? Forget it. I suddenly don't understand anything. Without those tasty bribes, I am stubborn and pretend I can't hear a thing.  Schnauzers? We're a mixed bag—sometimes bossy, often needy, and always a bit spoiled. But hey, that's just part of our charm; you never quite know what you'll get with us. The Verdict: Is Your Life Schnauzer-Ready? Before you say "yes" to those expressive eyes and that quirky personality, consider if you're ready for a life filled with adventure, laughter, occasional drama and a lot of sass. Schnauzers aren't just pets; we're your partners in crime. Most of my human's friends are also proud schnauzer owners, simply because they get it—the exhilarating, rollercoaster experience of sharing life with a schnauzer. Conclusion If you're looking for a dog that combines brains, beauty, and a boundless spirit, then a schnauzer might be the ideal addition to your life. Embracing a schnauzer is to welcome a whirlwind of joy and playful trouble. Are you ready for the wildest ride of your life with a schnauzer as your adventurous sidekick?  PS. • Schnauzer Horoscope 2024: The Year of the Dragon

Known for their bold attitude, remarkable intelligence, and iconic bearded appearance, Schnauzers are set to experience a year brimming with curiosity, protective instincts, and an insatiable love for adventure. Discover your Schnauzer's 2024 Horoscope in the Year of the Dragon: luck, health, and adventure await in this unique pet astrology guide. 🐲 Traits and Expectations This year, the Dragon's fiery energy promises to amplify a Schnauzer's natural zest for life. Owners, brace yourselves for an increase in zoomies, vocal debates over treats, and an unwavering amount of neediness. But what makes the Year of the Dragon so special for Schnauzers? In the realms of the Chinese Zodiac, the Dragon symbolizes luck, strength, and life force—qualities that resonate deeply with the vibrant spirit of the Schnauzer. Schnauzer Strengths Schnauzers are nothing short of remarkable, blending their vibrant energy with a penchant for communication and natural leadership. Majestic beards and eyebrows, always styled to perfection, are not just for show; these features enhance their dignified appearance and charm. Each size variant brings its own strengths to the table: Miniatures display remarkable leadership, Standards exhibit trainability, and Giants are known for their loyalty. Schnauzer Weaknesses Despite their many virtues, Schnauzers face their own set of challenges. Their brilliant minds crave constant engagement, leading to the occasional indoor tornado of toys. Their intelligent and occasionally stubborn nature means that motivation—often in the form of praise or treats—is vital to their learning. Their vanity and pursuit of attention can sometimes lead to a snobbish demeanor towards other breeds. Luck and Fortune Lucky Charms A squeaky toy shaped like a dragon: Not only will it pay homage to the year, but it promises endless en tertainment and good fortune. A blue collar: Representing water, it's the perfect accessory to temper the Dragon's fiery influence, inviting tranquility and health into your Schnauzer's life. Lucky Foods Expect your Schnauzer to show a keen interest in chicken (for courage and adventure) and carrots (for health and vitality). Incorporate these into their diet for a promising year. Lucky Numbers The numbers 3 and 8 will weave magic into your Schnauzer's year, so consider planning special outings or treat counts around these numbers. A total of 8 jerky treats a day or a playdate on the 3rd of the month will bring joy and luck.  Avoiding Unlucky Omens Sidestep water puddles on walks to prevent the elemental clash with the Dragon's fire, safeguarding against unexpected baths and dampened spirits. Love Life Single Schnauzers should dial down the sass to attract a worthy companion, while committed Schnauzers will renew their vows of loyalty, perhaps with a ceremonial digging of a shared hole in the yard or at the beach, cementing their love under the watchful eye of the Dragon. Career For the working schnauzer (be it watchdog, lap warmer, or professional greeter), 2024 is a year to assert dominance in the career field. Expect them to take on more responsibilities, such as guarding the house or managing the household with newfound authority. A promotion to Head of Security or Chief Cuddle Officer could be in the stars. Health The Year of the Dragon brings a burst of energy, which can be double-edged. While schnauzers will enjoy robust health, there's a risk of overexertion. Balance activity with relaxation, and consider puzzle and enrichment toys to maintain mental stimulation without overdoing physical exertion.  Conclusion The Year of the Dragon is a time for Schnauzers to shine brightly, embrace their quirks, and lead their human companions on unforgettable adventures. With a balanced approach to activity, nutrition, and rest, this Year of the Dragon will be one for the history books in the life of every Schnauzer. • Join the LA Schnauzer Meetup: West Coast's Largest Gathering of Schnauzers

Did you know that right here in Los Angeles, we host the biggest schnauzer meetup on the West Coast and the second biggest in North America? The crown for the biggest schnauzer gathering still goes to an annual Schnauzerfest event in Rome, Georgia, but we're catching up with our own spectacular show of schnauzer spirit (mostly barking and sassy attitude). On February 25th, @simonsaysschnauzer hosted The Los Angeles Schnauzer Meetup where more than 130 schnauzers took over the Sepulveda Basin Off-Leash Dog Park in Van Nuys. Picture this: minis yapping with unmatched enthusiasm, standards initiating playful chases, and giants showcasing their legendary patience amidst a sea of minis either passionately sniffing around or playfully asserting their dominance over friends ten times their size. Kicking off the year with such a vibrant gathering, we've set the bar high for 2024! The "Los Angeles Schnauzer Meetup" might sound city-specific, but our latest event was attended by schnauzers and their humans across cities and borders. We had friends from all over LA, San Bernardino, and Orange County, not to mention visitors from San Diego, Arizona, and our very special guest, Bacon @baconthedoggers, who jetted in from Toronto, Canada. It's safe to say this was a global affair, buzzing with the excitement of cute, bearded faces and those signature curly lashes. Top to Bottom: @baconthedoggers , @simonsaysschnauzer , @marcy.the.schnauzer and @clementine_the_mini_schnauzer A Glimpse into Our Schnauzer-Filled Day Missed out? Fear not! This is just the first of many this year. If you and your schnauzer enjoy the splash of water, you won't want to miss our Summer Meetup. Last year, we chased waves and cooled off with delicious treats from The Bear & The Rat at Rosie's Dog Beach. Still on the fence about joining us? Let me paint you a picture: over 100 schnauzers decked out in their cutest costumes, engaging in a grand sniff-and-greet while their humans enjoy the spectacle (some even in matching outfits!). Eager to witness the cutest, loudest, and sassiest schnauzers around? Make sure to follow @simonsaysschnauzer, the dapper gentleman behind these memorable events, for updates on our next meetup. All sizes are welcome, schnauzer mixes, friends of schnauzers and schnauzer lovers. We can't wait to see you and your schnauzer at our next gathering! Shoutout to Sherrie Evans @pixbysle for taking photos of our oh-so adorable faces. Your miniature friend with a giant ego, Calvin 🐾

  • How Schnauzers Celebrate Lunar New Year in LA

Remember how much fun we had with that Schnauzer horoscope for 2024? Well, guess what—we figured you'd get a kick out of hearing how we Schnauzers partied it up for the Lunar New Year in Los Angeles. And let me tell you, it was epic! On February 24th, our crew attended the Paw Lantern Festival, thrown by the awesome folks at Pawsitive Management. Over 2,500 humans and their furry best friends from different cities in California and other states, and a friend even flew all the way from Toronto, Canada, just to party! The Lunar New Year is all about setting the vibe for the year ahead, right? So, I made sure to taste test as many treats as possible, snag all the back rubs I could get, strike my best poses for the camera, and obviously sweet-talked my way into scoring more treats. If my year is filled with this much love, treats, and IG-worthy shots, we're on track for another successful year.  Trying to get us all into a group photo was a mission, but trust me, we tried. Aside from the cute faces you see below, we spotted more mini schnauzers at the event, a giant schnauzer four times our size at only 10 months and our standard schnauzer friend, Jack, pictured below. Yes, all sizes were represented that day. Thinking about a summer getaway? You've gotta join us in LA for the Pawlympics by Pawsitive MGMT this June. Plenty of time to get in shape for either agility trials or, in my case, the snack-eating championship. Wanna know more?  Click here  for the deets. In short, we turned heads with our adorable antics and sassy charm. And hey, if you're in LA and want to experience all the fun, sign up for my newsletter. It's your golden ticket to all the cool, doggo-friendly events around town. Catch you at the next party! Your friend and ultimate party animal,  Calvin

  • Special Screening Review: "Arthur The King" Movie

Prepare your tissues for a truly unique and emotional journey. This story is a rollercoaster of emotions, from tears to laughter and pure joy. I was incredibly fortunate to attend a special 'Arthur the King' screening. I had the rare privilege of sharing this experience with my friends, their humans, and Arthur's real family, adding a special layer of authenticity and connection to the movie. As you can see, I have already made myself part of their family. Maybe Lionsgate wants to produce a part 2 called "Calvin The King"? "Arthur The King" unfolds the heartwarming journey of an adventure racer and a stray dog named Arthur. This movie invites you on an adventure that will tug at your heartstrings and leave you crying tears of happiness. Based on the true story of Mikael Lindnord (played by Mark Wahlberg), the film takes us along a grueling 435-mile endurance race. Mikael and his team aim to win the Adventure Racing World Championship in the Dominican Republic. It's during this intense competition that they meet Arthur (played by Ukai), a wounded stray who becomes their unlikely companion. As they cross rivers and hike through dense forests, Arthur does more than just become the team's mascot; he embodies teamwork and friendship, showing compassion, loyalty, and redefining the meaning of victory. As the quintessential 'man's best friend,' Arthur stands as a profound testament to the deep emotional bond between humans and dogs, a bond that transcends words and touches the heart. There was one scene, in particular, where Arthur's determination truly exemplified the spirit of perseverance, leaving not a single dry eye in the room. His journey with the team showcased that sometimes, it's the unexpected challenges and companions that bring out the best in us. In theaters March 15, 2024. PS. Make sure you hug your dog after watching the movie. Also, it's okay to ugly cry in public. Your Pawllywood reporter, Calvin

  • 10 Tips for a Stress-free Dining Experience with Your Dog

Living in LA has its perks, and one of them is the year-round outdoor seating at many restaurants. We absolutely love taking advantage of this. If you're following me on Instagram @sweetlifeofcalvin, you've probably seen how much I enjoy brunch dates with my human, and how thrilled I am to order something from the doggy menu.  Of course, I didn't always get invited because I could sometimes be very disruptive, but with some preparation and exposure, it can be a fun activity to enjoy with your dog. Here are my top 10 tips for a stress-free and smooth dining experience with your dog. 1. Verify Dog-Friendly Policies It's crucial to always verify if the restaurant is genuinely dog-friendly. A simple call or a quick look at their website can provide you with essential information about their pet policies and any potential restrictions on dog seating like what my friend @nalatheschnoodle's parents did when they took me out for brunch while on vacation here in LA. Utilizing platforms like Yelp can also be a helpful tool in this regard.  2. Evaluate Your Dog's Readiness Assess how your dog behaves in public. If your dog is still learning the ropes, don't worry, with some pre-visit training, they can handle the environment calmly. Before I could join the human dining in restaurants, we frequented local dog-friendly shops and sat on chairs outside cafes and coffee shops. It was overwhelming at first, with all the smells, sounds, and the urge to say hi to everyone. But with patience and practice, I learned to sit calmly and enjoy the outing.  3. Pack Smart Yes, many dog-friendly restaurants will offer a dog bowl, but just in case, always carry a portable water bowl, your dog's favorite treats, and a quiet toy to keep them entertained. A carrier bag is always a great idea for smaller dogs so you can place them on chairs, and for medium and bigger dogs, a portable mat is a great option. You can also bring some wipes to wipe off the crumbs and puppuccino from your dog's face. 4. Keep Them on a Short Leash Keeping your dog close is essential to avoid unexpected leaps onto neighboring tables, even in dog-friendly spots. I have a habit of begging for food from other people, so that's very important.  5. Choose Off-Peak Hours Visit during quieter times like late mornings or mid-afternoons. It's generally less crowded, which can help keep your dog relaxed. As I said, the sound and the smell can all be overwhelming, so let's ensure it's a beautiful experience for you and your dog.  6. Opt for Strategic Seating Ask for a secluded spot, preferably with some space around it, to help your dog feel less overwhelmed and more comfortable. With all the foot traffic and dishes being brought out, we want to ensure we do not have grumpy dogs barking at the waiter waiting for their order. I also resource guard so when I'm out with friends, we sit at the end of the table and the human makes sure she serves as a barrier between me and another dog. 7. Pre-Meal Feeding Feed your dog a light meal beforehand to curb hunger and prevent food-grubbing behavior at the table. Treats can be used sparingly to reinforce good tableside manners. Of course, this does not apply to me as I am always hungry, but it does prevent me from pawing the human and giving her puppy eyes while she eats.  8.Monitor Their Behavior Watch for signs of stress or discomfort. Ensure your dog isn't being a nuisance by keeping barking to a minimum and ensuring they stay settled. I tend to resource guard, so when I'm around food with other dogs, even friends, I tend to be aggressive. We keep working on that, so if I start giving death stares, my human knows I need some distraction or, better yet, space. There was also a time when I was panting so hard and was laser-focused on a tree, that's when the human realized I might have seen a squirrel, so of course, she dangled a bacon strip on my face to divert my attention.  9. Plan for Quick Exits Know the nearest exit, just in case you need to step out for a break or if your dog isn't adjusting well to the environment. Sometimes, we need to take a walk for a bit and maybe mark some posts outside to keep us relaxed a bit. 10. Be Prepared to Leave If Needed If your dog gets too stressed or isn't enjoying the outing, remember, it's perfectly okay to leave early. We all have our off days, and sometimes, the environment just isn't right for us. Trust me, we love to join you and get something off the doggy menu, but sometimes we get overwhelmed or can't get over at the other dog giving us a side eye from the other table. So, be ready to leave, and try another time when your dog might feel more up to the challenge.  Going out for brunch, getting a treat from the menu, and seeing lots of smiles from other guests make me happy. I know you'll enjoy it too, so I hope these tips will help you and your human have a wonderful dining experience.  I want to see your brunch dates with the human, so tag me on Instagram @sweetlifeofcalvin, and hopefully, we will bump into each other and share a side of bacon on a sunny Sunday morning. If you find these tips helpful, sign up for my newsletter for more paw-fessional advice.  'Til next time!

  • Tips for Getting Your Dog Ready for a Professional Photoshoot

One of the most common questions I get is how my human can make me pose for the camera. If you're new here, I am a model and influencer, so I always pose for the camera, and I have the receipts—check out  @sweetlifeofcalvin on Instagram.  Today, we'll dive into professional pet photography. I recently did several photoshoots in the past few weeks, and for those planning on booking a professional session for the holidays, whether to capture those precious memories or include your pup (or simply your pup) on the card, you'll have enough time to prepare.  We'll break this down into three stages: pre-shoot, during the shoot, and post-photoshoot. I'll also help you choose the right photographer if you live in Los Angeles. Check out this article to see the different photography styles my favorite top LA Pet Photographers .  Preparing Your Pup for the Photoshoot 1. G rooming is Key : Brush your pup, wipe down, and get those eye boogers out. I may not have a glorious beard like most schnauzers, but I still carry a brush to ensure my beard looks extra fluffy on camera.  Tip: Schedule your grooming appointment a few days b efore your shoot just in case you get shaved down a little shorter than planned so you can find creative ways to deal with a bad haircut.  2. Exercise First : A tired dog is a calm dog. A new set always piques our curiosity, and sometimes, we might get too excited and do zoomies on set—or worse, pee on set. This is why a long walk is always a must for me before I go on set, but don't overdo it because a tired pup might not be very cooperative, especially when doing certain poses.  3. Practice Commands : Brush up on basic commands like sit, stay, and look. These will be invaluable during the shoot. I do not know many commands, but I know my sit, down, and wait, and with just those 3, I can give the photographer enough time to capture my best angle.  Tip: Treats and praises are always a good motivation for a pup to sit and stay. Make sure you reward your pup while you practice.  4. Get Them Used to Lights and Sounds : Spend time letting your dog get used to shutter sounds and flashes on your iPhone. Some pups might freak out hearing sounds or have eyes sensitive to light, so as much as we want to have amazing photos, you also want to make sure your pup is enjoying the experience. Photoshoot Day: Things to Bring and What to Do What to Bring 1. Treats and Toys : High-value treats and favorite toys are great for grabbing your pup's attention and rewarding good behavior. Please make sure you're generous with those treats during the session to keep us extra motivated. I usually get treats as soon as I get on set, in between takes, and after my sessions. It also helps me associate these activities with fun and unlimited treats. You know me, I'll do anything for treats.  2. Outfits: Dressing up for a photoshoot makes a big difference. A cute bandana or bow makes any pup look extra adorable. A nice collar and harness can help you attain that touch of luxury or a fun twist in your photos. If you are extra like me, dress up to the set's theme. You would want a more cohesive look where you blend in your surroundings and make the final images look more fun. What to Do 1. Get Your Pup's Attention : It's time to use those treats and toys. Toys, especially the squeaky ones, are always a great way to get your pup's attention and get them to look at the camera. When I started, my human would bring a squeaky ball on set to help me look at the camera. Now, I'm more treat-motivated, so we always carry some trainer treats on set and get a treat all throughout the shoot. Weird noises are also an excellent way to get a curious pup's attention. If only images had audio, you'd hear my human say treeeaaattt in a high-pitched tone. She also loves yelling words and phrases she knows I'll be excited about, such as "park," 'stick," "Do you want to go outside?", 'What's that?" and "Look!".   2. Use Commands : You've been practicing, so now it's time to use those commands on set. As I have mentioned, I do not know many dog tricks, but I have seen some stand, hold an object in their mouths, or lie down on the floor, so honestly, the more you know, the more creative and fun your photos will turn out. I usually sit on sets, so the command we always use is "wait," which is my cue to hold that position. Then, when I hear, "Okay, let's go!, that's my sign to leave the set; either the shoot is over, or there are some set and outfit changes. 3. Be patient : Sometimes, your pup has difficulty holding a pose for 2 seconds or is too distracted. It happens. There are plenty of times when I prefer to kiss everyone on set rather than be on camera, so just be patient. Let your pup sniff around, get belly rubs, and even roll on set. It doesn't always have to be perfect; sometimes candid photos are more fun.  Choosing the Right Photographer 1. Portfolio Review : Look for photographers who specialize in pet photography and check out their portfolios to see their style. Different photographers have different styles, and their style must align with what you need and how you envision these photos to turn out. A studio photographer might not be comfortable doing an outdoor shoot, or an action photographer might not have the elaborate holiday set you want to put on your holiday cards.  As I mentioned earlier, I recently did a couple of photoshoots in the past month, and I want you to take a look at these two photos as an example. Two different photographers with two different styles and themes. Both images look stunning. It all comes down to personal preference. I love a combination of elaborate, fun sets where I get to dress up and a clean, minimalistic background where we focus on my cute face. Side note:  My initial response when I see a camera is to sit and stay still, which is why we have not done any outdoor/action shoots until now. When we think of an outdoor/action shoot, we think of a pup running on the beach or jumping over logs on the trail. As much as it is crucial to find the right photographer for your needs, it is also important to assess your pup's capabilities to ensure you get the final images of how you imagine them to be.  2. Budget and Packages : I know we are very adorable, and these photos are priceless, but budget will always come into play. If you are not ready to commit to a full session, most photographers offer mini or micro sessions. These are a great way to see how your pup reacts on set, especially for the first time or when trying out a new photographer. Tip: Follow them on social media and sign up for their newsletters, as these types of promotions are usually offered during special events or for a limited time.  Post photoshoot 1. Reward, Reward, Reward : Always reward your pup after a photoshoot. I know shoots can sometimes be stressful and humans get anxious about how the photos would turn out but at the end of the day, we all know that you'll be happy because it's our faces on it. I always see photoshoots as a perfect opportunity for me to get treats, so by rewarding us with a treat, a trip to the park, or a special meal, you help us associate this with a good experience.  2. Assess your overall experience : At the beginning, my human would always take note of what commands I can do in a new environment, what captures my attention more, and we all know the answer to that and what I can and cannot do. Knowing your pup's strengths and weaknesses will help your next photoshoot experience more fun. It is also a perfect opportunity to work on tricks that can be used for future sessions. In the past, I would fall flat on the floor if you put something on my head, like a hat or set props, and we worked on that. Now, you can see me sporting different hats and head accessories with a big smile while I sit comfortably.  This is also the time to assess if you'll be working with the same photographer in the future. Different photographers have different styles and approaches, so aside from the final product, you also want to look back at the beautiful experience you and your pup had. I am extremely lucky that I was able to work with amazing and very patient photographers who are always so playful on set and would give me head scratches and treats all throughout my session. You always see me with a big smile in my photos, and that's how you know I am comfortable on set and having so much fun. Pet photography is a fantastic way to capture your pup's unique personality and charm. I hope these tips will help you prepare for your next big photoshoot that results in beautiful, memorable images. Make sure to sign up to my newsletter for more helpful tips and pawfessional advice. • Olympic Content Guide for Pets and Petfluencers

With over 29 million viewers worldwide tuning in at the opening ceremony, the Olympics is the perfect time to captivate your audience with creativity. This event provides an excellent opportunity to reach a wider audience. Here's how you can leverage the Olympics to create engaging pet content within your niche in the pet industry. Olympic "Training" Sessions While 'training' might sound serious, we're all about fun and joy here. You can interpret this in ways that align with your brand and your pup's abilities. We'll start with activities that mimic Olympic athlete training but with a playful twist. Agility Training: Showcase your pup practicing agility exercises, such as jumping through hoops, going through weave poles, and running through tunnels. Capture this in a fun video or a series of photos. Endurance Challenges: Document your pup's training routine with activities like fetch marathons, swim days, and long walks, emphasizing their "training" for the Pet Olympics. Not every pup can jump through hoops and that’s okay. For the rest of us who prefer the comfort of our home, showcase your version of 'training.' We are all in this together, no matter your pup's abilities. Treat Training: Using treat trainers, show off your pup's treat-catching skills to demonstrate focus and coordination. Alternatively, use enrichment toys like lick mats and snuffle mats and time how fast your pup can finish those treats in hopes of breaking a new world record. Cardio Training: Who said zoomies don't count? Whether indoors or outdoors, zoomies are a great way to show stamina. Bonus points if your pup creates a tornado effect during indoor zoomies. Whether you're showing your pup's skills or lack thereof, staying true to yourself will always keep your audience engaged and make your content relatable. Team USA Outfits Show support for Team USA by dressing up your pup in red, white, and blue outfits and accessories. Everyone loves a patriotic outfit, from shirts to bandanas to cute hats and bows. Show off how your pup rocks these looks! Gold Medal Moments Recreate an Olympic medal ceremony with your pet on a podium or with the Olympic rings in the background. Use props like medals, trophies, and ribbons. For example, my schnauzer crew and I took home the gold at the recent Palympics held at the LA Coliseum. Interactive Content Instagram stories are often an underutilized feature. Engage with your followers by asking questions and conducting polls and quizzes. Here are a few examples: Share a video of your pup doing weave poles and ask your followers to rate it from 0-10. Post two images of an outfit side by side and ask your followers which one they love most: outfit 1 or outfit 2. This is a great way to engage with your followers and gauge what content they enjoy the most. Educational Posts Providing value is a great way to show your followers the benefits of following you and emphasize your brand's values. For instance: If you focus on health, discuss the benefits of a product you use for your pet or the type of training and its benefits, because being healthy is essential for pups training for the Olympics. Share tips on how to train a stubborn, treat-motivated pup like a schnauzer, making the post relatable and educational. Collaborations and Partnerships Whether you're already working with your dream brand or aspiring to, showcase products in collaboration with brands, endorse them to your followers through affiliate marketing, or share something you like. Examples include: Highlight the benefits of supplements you use for your pet and how they help your pup perform their best to win the gold in the Olympics. Create GRWM-type content using grooming products, showing your audience how your pup prepares to look their best for a podium moment. By creatively adapting Olympic themes into your pet content, you can engage your audience, increase your visibility, and connect with new followers. • Halloween Content Ideas for Your Pup's Instagram

Hey there, dog parents! By now, your Instagram feed is probably haunted by Halloween-inspired posts—costumes, spooky parties, and eerie backdrops galore!  But I know how overwhelming it can be—thinking of what your pup should wear, planning how to decorate, and capturing it all for your feed. Trust me, I’ve been there! With years of experience from countless Howl-O-Ween parties and, of course, having an obsessed dog mom, I’m here to share my top Halloween content ideas to spook and delight your Instagram followers this season. So take notes and follow my lead! Halloween Dog Costumes Ideas Let’s be real—a pup in a costume is an instant double-tap magnet. You know it, I know it. There’s something about a pup in costume that makes everyone stop scrolling and say, “Awwww, so cute!”  Now, before you get all stressed thinking you need to create the most extravagant costume ever, let me tell you—simple can be just as effective! Whether it’s a store-bought Dracula cape or a DIY superhero suit, it doesn’t need to break the bank. In fact, I recommend investing in classic costumes like a Dracula cape or superhero outfit that can be reused every year. These timeless pieces always stay in style and are super versatile. Want more inspo? Check out this article . 📸 @ petshotstudios If your pup is more on the “I’m not moving in this thing” side of the costume spectrum, don’t worry. Some pups just aren’t about that costume life, but you can always opt for a Halloween-themed bandana or harness. My favorite? Bat wings! Not only do they give off the spooky vibe, but they’re also comfy enough for your pup to wear while strutting around the park or chilling at home. Content Tips: Tell a story with your post! Sure, your pup will look adorable in any costume, but it’s the caption or storytelling in your reel that will really hook your audience. Get creative with it! For the ultimate “awww” factor, coordinate costumes with your pup—or go all out with matching costumes for a group of pup friends! Imagine the likes pouring in. Drool-worthy Halloween Treats for Dogs What’s Halloween without the treats, right? And if you follow me on Instagram @sweetlifeofcalvin , you know I’m ALL about the treats—so much so that I might even get a little treat-wasted every now and then.  If your pup has a sensitive tummy, finding Halloween-themed treats might be tricky, but there are plenty of options for pups with stronger stomachs, like me. Local pet stores and barkeries usually offer some spooky cookies this time of year—so make sure to check them out. In LA, we have no shortage of drool-worthy seasonal goodies from small businesses that are perfect for spoiling your pup. Feeling like getting crafty? Try making your own Halloween treats at home! Here’s a fun recipe from Honest Kitchen that I love. Get 20% off your first purchase when you use code: TREATSSWEETLIFEOFCALVIN . Content Tips: Get those spooky vibes going by putting your pup in a Halloween bandana or costume and staging a treat-tasting session. A carousel of photos with your pup’s different expressions or a reel of them chowing down is guaranteed to charm your followers. Make a barkuterie board with Halloween-themed treats! Show your followers the ultimate  treat haul for the season. If your pup loves taste tests, you could turn it into a fun video where they try each treat and rate it. If you’re making homemade treats, share the process! Create a step-by-step recipe video and follow up with a taste test for your pup. Your followers will appreciate the behind-the-scenes look—and who doesn’t love seeing a pup enjoy treats? Halloween Inspired Home Decor Okay, costumes and treats are fun, but let’s not forget about decorating for Halloween!   While we don’t go all  out with home decor,  adding small spooky elements here and there really sets the mood for photos and videos. Sometimes, it’s just a tiny pumpkin next to me or a witch’s book propped up on my crate, but these little touches go a long way in creating those Halloween vibes. Ideas for Halloween Decor: Haunted Pup House:  Turn a corner of your home, your pup’s bed or crate into a mini haunted house. A few cobwebs, skeletons, and bats which you can find at any dollar store or local arts and crafts store will do the trick! Pumpkin Patch at Home:  Can’t make it to a real pumpkin patch? No problem! Pile some pumpkins and fall leaves in your living room or backyard and voilà—instant autumn vibes. Pro tip: Fake pumpkins work just as well and you can use them year after year. Spooky Yard:  If you’ve got a yard, go all out with tombstones, ghosts, and skeletons. If not, find a lawn or doorstep on your next walk with a spooky setup and snap some pics with your pup! Just make sure your pup doesn’t mark the Halloween decorations. Or worse, attack the fake crows like what I did.  Content Tips: Set up a mini home photoshoot! While nighttime shots seem fun and super spooky, make sure your pup is well-lit so they stay the focal point of the photo. You can always add spooky lighting in the background later. Coordinate your pup’s costume with the decor. If you’ve got skeleton decorations, why not dress your dog in a skeleton onesie to match the theme? Your feed will look cohesive and super festive. Dog-Friendly Halloween Events in Your Area For pups who love the spotlight (like me), dog-friendly Halloween events are a must! Whether it’s a Howl-O-Ween party or a pup parade, Halloween is the perfect time to show off your costumes and get all the attention. In LA, we’re spoiled for choice when it comes to pet-friendly events. From parties at local pet stores to pumpkin patch meetups, there’s always something going on. I know it can be hard to keep track of all the events, so here’s how to stay updated: Follow local pet-friendly event pages and accounts for your area—they often post the latest happenings. My friends at @losangeles.pups  have a complete list of pup-friendly events and breed meetups in SoCal and  Pawsitive Mgmt hosts my favorite events in LA. A few months ago, they hosted Pawlympics at the historic LA Coliseum. If you’ve RSVPed for an event before, follow those businesses on Eventbrite to get notifications about future events. Join local Facebook groups or chat groups that focus on dog-friendly activities—members often share event details you might not find elsewhere. For my SoCal friends, check out SoCal Dog Events on Facebook. 📍 Healthy Spot Spooktacular Event Content Tips: Create a vlog-style video of your Halloween day out with your pup! Capture everything, from their reaction to spooky decor to interactions with other dogs. The more candid, the better! If your page is more fashion-focused, consider a “What Pups Wore at Halloween” post, showcasing all the creative costumes you see at the event. Your followers will love it, and it’ll inspire them for next year’s Howl-O-Ween! Other Halloween Content Ideas for Instagram Offer exclusive Halloween promo codes and discounts. Host a Halloween Giveaway with your favorite brands. Halloween is the perfect excuse to go all out with costumes, treats, and spooky content for your pup’s Instagram. Whether you’re dressing up, creating tasty treats, or visiting local Halloween events, there’s no shortage of fun ideas to keep your followers engaged and entertained.  Want even more Howl-O-Ween inspo?
