- 7 Essential Tips to Keep Your Dog Calm and Safe During 4th of July Fireworks
Happy 4th of July ❤️🤍💙 As much as I love backyard barbecues, parades, and parties, there's one part of the 4th of July I don't look forward to - the fireworks. The noise doesn't terrify me, but it makes me very angry, just like when a skateboard zooms by or the delivery guy rings the doorbell. If you're not familiar with schnauzers, we constantly bark our heads off. We're loud and can bark all day, which can drive our humans crazy sometimes. Unfortunately, many of my furry friends panic and run away during fireworks. Did you know more dogs run away during the 4th of July than any other time of the year? We can't avoid the loud noises and fireworks, but as a responsible owner, I know you'll do your best to keep us safe and lessen our stress and anxiety. Here are some things my human does and hopefully will keep your dog stay calm and safe during the 4th of July. 7 Essential Tips to Keep Your Dog Calm and Safe During 4th of July Fireworks 1. Prepare a Safe Space Creating a comfortable and secure environment for your dog is vital in helping them feel at ease during the 4th of July festivities. As an owner, you have the power to control the environment and make it less stressful for us. In our case, we close all windows to lessen the noise, keep the TV on a little louder, and set up my bed in the living room with my blanket, toys, and treats to distract me. My human is there to give me pets when I start to growl and toss my squeaky ball to distract me. 2. Provide Identification As I mentioned earlier, many dogs panic and run away during this time, so make sure your dog is wearing a tag with your contact information. If your dog is microchipped, ensure that information is up to date. Consider investing in pet trackers and GPS dog collars. I personally use a Fi collar which allows my human to detect my location and she gets pinged when I get out of my "safe zone" Check out this article for The Best Pet Trackers and GPS Dog Collars for 2025 by PCMag. 3. Avoid Firework Displays Unless it's a pet-friendly silent fireworks, we do not want to be a part of that. The loud sounds and bright lights can be very overwhelming and frightening. In case you need clarification about what a pet-friendly silent fireworks is, it's essentially hundreds of drones flying in the sky in different formations similar to fireworks. A couple years ago, Stella and Chewy's had a special fireworks display for us at the Santa Monica Pier, and it was such an extraordinary experience. Stella and Chewy's Dog-Friendly Fireworks 📍 Santa Monica Pier 4. Keep Them Calm with Dog Calming Aids If your dog is particularly sensitive to loud noises, consider using calming aids such as anxiety vests, noise-protecting earmuffs, and calming chews like CBD-infused treats. These products can help soothe your pet's nerves and reduce anxiety during fireworks or other noisy celebrations. I usually take a CBD treat 30 minutes to an hour before the fireworks start and get busy with my yak chew puffs. It has worked wonders for me. 5. Take Care of Business Early One mistake my human made when I was a puppy was taking me out for my usual night walk on the 4th of July. To her defense, it was her first year celebrating the 4th in LA, and she didn't know there would be so many illegal fireworks. I was minding my business when a firework that sounded and felt like a bomb exploded. I was so terrified that I had diarrhea for two days. So, get your steps in and business done early so you can spend a more relaxing night at home cuddling with your human, preferably chewing on a treat. 6. Exercise Before the Celebrations In addition to taking care of business early, I usually go on a hike or spend a couple of hours at the beach to burn off extra energy. When I'm tired, I tend to be more calm and less affected by noises. I also got some new snuffle mats this year, which is a great way to stimulate our minds. 📍 Rosie's Dog Beach, Long Beach CA 7. Consult Your Vet If you know your dog struggles with fear or anxiety during fireworks, speak to your vet ahead of time. The tips I mentioned above work for me, but I'm not a dogtor who can give you professional advice or prescribe suitable calming aids and medication for your dog. You can enjoy the holiday with peace of mind by taking proactive steps to ensure your dog's safety and well-being during the 4th of July celebrations. Remember, we rely on you to keep us safe and secure throughout the festivities. With some preparation and care, you can make the holiday enjoyable for you and your dog. Here's to a happy, safe, and stress-free 4th of July for you and your best friend! Enjoy, be safe and celebrate with treats! Want more paw-fessional tips? Make sure you follow @sweetlifeofcalvin . - Dog-Friendly Farmers Markets and Flea Markets in Los Angeles
Photo by Mary Haber Pets @mary_haber_pets Looking for a way to enjoy the weekend while staying local and supporting small businesses? I've sniffed out the best dog-friendly farmers markets and flea markets in Los Angeles where you can grab fresh produce, shop local vendors and bring your pup along for one of the best dog-friendly outdoor experiences and sniffaris in the city. Whether you're looking to stock up on farm-fresh veggies or hunt for vintage treasures, these open-air markets in Los Angeles offer something for everyone and most importantly, allow our cute faces to roam and soak up all the love. If your pup is a pro like me, they'll even get lots of head scratches from strangers. So, leash up and follow my lead! Dog-Friendly Farmers Markets in Los Angeles The Original Farmers Market 📍 6333 W 3rd St, Los Angeles, CA 90036 Monday - Friday : 9 AM - 9 PM Saturday : 10 AM - 9 PM Sunday : 10 AM - 7 PM An LA landmark since 1934, The Original Farmers Market features over 100 vendors, restaurants, and specialty shops. Dogs are welcome in outdoor dining areas and walkways and the best part? They even have a Dog Bakery ! I never leave without getting my munchkins and carrot cake treats. LA River Farmers' Market 📍 1245 N Spring St, Los Angeles, CA 90012 Every Thursday : 3 - 7:30 PM This one is a gray area and not only because some colors appear gray-ish to me. Because this is a smaller market located at the entrance of the Los Angeles State Historic Park, pups like us are allowed as we enter and exit the park. It offers farm-fresh produce, artisanal snacks, plants and handmade products. In the summer, I love saying hi to produce vendors for the free berries while the human gets a pistachio croissant from Le Saint Honoré or a sea salt choc chip cookie from Mud Cookies before we proceed to sit and people-watch in the park. The Ultimate Guide to Dog-Friendly Flea Markets in Los Angeles Melrose Trading Post 📍 7850 Melrose Ave, Los Angeles, CA 90046 Every Sunday : 10 AM - 6 PM Held every Sunday at Fairfax High School, this trendy market is a hotspot for vintage fashion, handmade goods, and delicious food trucks. I always enjoy sniffing everything but please be extra careful as many breakable and delicate items are displayed on the floor. We come here to hang out, enjoy good food, and listen to live music, which makes for a perfect chill brunch idea on a Sunday. Silverlake Flea 📍 1500 Griffith Park Blvd, Los Angeles, CA 90026 Friday : 10 AM - 3:30 PM Saturday : 8:30 AM - 3:30 PM Sunday : 9:30 AM - 3:30 PM Located in the hip Sunset area, this market is excellent for finding vinyl, antiques, and vintage clothing. If shopping here isn't enough cardio, head over to Echo Park just a couple of blocks away and get in more steps as you make the loop around the park while your pup "hunts" for ducks. Los Feliz Flea 📍 Marshall High School, 3939 Tracy St, Los Angeles, CA 90027 Saturday : 11 AM - 5 PM Hosted by VintageLand LA, this Saturday market is more than just a shopping destination - it's an entertainment hub. It also features pickleball courts, tattoo shops, an indoor skate park, a VR escape room, and a rooftop pet area. Pasadena City College Flea Market 📍 1570 E Colorado Blvd, Pasadena, CA 91106 Sunday : 8 AM - 3 PM (first Sunday of every month) Held monthly, this large-scale flea market spans multiple levels and is known for rare finds and collectibles. Indulge in tamales, tacos, and the cuteness of the adoptable pups from Pasadena Humane who are always in attendance. Santa Monica Airport Antique Market 📍 3223 Donald Douglas Loop S, Santa Monica, CA 90405 This market is ideal for serious antique collectors and design enthusiasts. From fashion finds to one-of-a-kind pieces, statement jewelry, and even textiles, there's always something for everyone here. Tips for Bringing Your Dog to a Farmers or Flea Market Tip 1 : Know your pup Markets can get loud and crowded. If your dog gets overwhelmed easily, try to go early before the rush. You can also start by taking 5-10 minutes to stand and observe from the side, allowing your pup to calm down instead of directly weaving through the crowd. Tip 2 : Bring Water Although these places have food vendors, it's always best to bring your own water and a portable water bowl especially in the summer. Tip 3 : Keep an eye on your pup Some vendors sell foods that are toxic to dogs, so be sure to avoid any sneaky snacking. While I will never grab a sample or food products on the table, the ground is always free for all and trust me, there are plenty of crumbs there. One time, a kid dropped her ice cream and I almost inhaled it. Tip 4 : Clean after your pup Always pick up after your dog and make sure it doesn't mark any of the vendor booths. Let's make sure we don't leave any surprises for other visitors, so we can continue to explore these places. Before I head out to my sniffaris, I always go on a 15-minute walk so I can take care of business and not expose myself to taking a big dump in the middle of a big crowd. Tip 5 : Use a 6-foot leash Most markets require non-retractable leashes for safety. It really makes it easier to manage your pup when it tries to pull off a snack heist or gets agitated with the way the other pup made eye contact. Whether it's a market, a pet-friendly dining spot, or any other pet-friendly location, it's always best to keep your pup on a short leash. Tip 6 : Reward good behavior Bring some training treats to reward good behavior. It's a win-win outing when you and your pup both had a great time, so make sure your pup knows they did a great job. I always get a high-pitched good boy with a head scratch when I don't growl at big dogs when I'm outside. One thing to note: if your pup loves treats as much as I do, make sure to reward them away from the crowd and other pups so they can enjoy the reward in peace. Tip 7 : Check the weather Final tip, always check the weather before you go and make sure your pup is dressed appropriately. In the summer, the hot pavement can hurt our paws, so make sure you apply some paw wax or even better, make us wear a stylish pair of boots. You can also get a cooling bandana to ensure your pup still looks stylish while feeling fresh. 📍 The Original Farmers' Market with @kodathecanineyoda and @lilkiwipie Shopping small and supporting local businesses is even better when your pup can join in the fun. Whether you're looking for fresh produce, handmade jewelry or a vintage shirt to match your pup's cool style, LA's markets are filled with possibilities. - Kick-off Summer With These Fun LA Dog Events in June
@sweetlifeofcalvin We all know how much I love to party and how LA’s pet party scene is on a different level, so I always get excited when summer hits because the biggest events happen right around this time of the year. Oftentimes, I spend every weekend plowing through treat bars, splashing in the water, meeting hundreds if not thousands of furry friends and humans and posing for Insta-worthy photos. If you’re a pup living in LA, it’s not a question of what you will do this summer but more of which activity suits you because, honestly, this month’s lineup alone is enough to keep you happy and tired for a few days. I’m particularly excited about Pawlympics 2024 by Pawsitive Mgmt at the LA Coliseum. Yes, you read that right. Pups partying in the LA Coliseum. Not only will this go down in history as the very first dog event at the iconic LA Coliseum, but this will undoubtedly be the biggest event this summer. If you haven’t been or heard of Pawsitive Mgmt’s events, then you’re either living under a rock or don’t have your priorities as a pet parent in check. Trust me when I say this, they throw the best parties! Pawlympics 2024 by Pawsitive Mgmt at LA Coliseum These events aren’t dog-friendly; these events are designed for us pups, and the humans are just here to tag along with the fun. If you’re not convinced, check out this video from last year’s summer event. Click here to get your ticket. If your pup needs more time to prepare for such a big event, start with these events and see how they react. This weekend, join DTLA’s Dog Days in Pershing Square and meet all the local businesses here in Downtown. DTLA Dogs Days in Pershing Square Pawbrey, a famous TikTok pup, is throwing a rooftop paw-ty called LA Dog Party at Figueroa and 8th. Watch out for other famous TikTok dogs in attendance, too! LA Dog Party If your dog loves to swim and or do agility, participate at Southpark Doggieland’s Pawlympics III . This is their 3rd year, and let me tell you, last year, I was 2.5 seconds shy of having a podium finish on their agility course, so I’ll be redeeming myself this year. South Park Doggieland's Palympics III Outdoor cinemas are always an anticipated summer activity, and this time, they are hosted by one of my favorite local stores - Healthy Spot. Yes, that black schnauzer on their newsletters and website is no other than me so you know I'll be there for Movie Night . If you know me, I’ll be hovering over that treat bar the entire time, even after the movie has started. Healthy Spot Movie Night at Ivy Station We’re just getting started here. There are so many more fun activities lined up this summer, but I don’t want to overwhelm you, so check back to get the most updated list, and make sure you sign-up to my newsletter to get the latest scoop on fun events happening in LA this summer! - 8 Valentine's Day Dog Date Ideas: The Ultimate Guide for Pet Parents
Image by Pet Shot Studios Hey, dog parents! Ever wondered what your pup's ideal Valentine's Day date looks like? Spoiler alert: it involves treats, belly rubs, and more treats! Whether you're flying solo or just want to show extra love to your furry Valentine, I've rounded up the best dog-friendly Valentine's Day dog date ideas to make your pup feel like the most loved dog in town. From pet-friendly brunch spots to dog beach trips, these ideas guarantee a paw-some day. 1. Dog-Friendly Valentine's Day Brunch Start the day with a cozy morning at a pet-friendly brunch spot with your pup by your side. Many restaurants in Los Angeles now offer alfresco dining with dog-friendly menus, so your pup can enjoy a treat while you sip on your latte. My Top Dog-friendly Brunch Spots in LA: Alcove Café and Bakery | 1929 Hillhurst Ave, Los Angeles, CA 90027 Bottega Louie WeHo | 8936 Santa Monica Blvd, West Hollywood, CA 90069 Pine and Crane DTLA | 1120 S Grand Ave Unit 101, Los Angeles, CA 90015 Pro Tip : Order a side of unseasoned eggs or a pup patty for your pup because sharing is caring. Many dog-friendly cafes also offer puppuccinos, which are a must for brunch dates! Rosie's Dog Beach 2. Romantic Dog Beach Date If your pup loves the water, a dog-friendly beach day is the perfect way to celebrate. Let them run free, dig in the sand, and enjoy some sunshine. Although many LA beaches are dog-friendly, always note that places like Venice Beach, Santa Monica, and Malibu only allow dogs on the boardwalk, not on the sand. Whether you've been busy or your pup's original costume didn't work out (we've all had those "nope, not wearing this" moments), I've got you covered with some last-minute Amazon Halloween dog costume ideas that will make your pup the star of every Howl-O-Ween party. From killer costumes to flippin' adorable looks, get ready to hit "Add to Cart" and follow my lead! (Full transparency here—some of the links in this blog are affiliate links, which means I may earn a small commission if you purchase through them. This helps support my treat fund at no additional cost to you!) 1. Baby Dog Killer Costume Let's start with something that'll turn heads AND get some laughs. This Baby Dog Killer costume is hilariously spooky and guaranteed to stop anyone in their scrolling tracks. Think tiny arms holding a (toy) knife and your dog looking like the cutest (and least threatening) villain. Content Tip: Stage a fun video of your pup chasing a toy or walking toward the camera in this costume. Then, add some suspenseful music for a fun reel that'll have your followers cracking up. 2. Panda Costume If there's another animal that's just as cute as your pup, it has to be a panda. This Tiktok viral panda costume from Pandaloon was even featured on Shark Tank , and I assure you, everyone will double-take when they see your pup. This is perfect for those pups who don't love elaborate costumes but still want to steal the show. Content Tip: Set your pup up in a bamboo-inspired setting and capture them lounging in their panda suit. Since I live pretty close to Chinatown, I took advantage of that to capture the cutest photos and accidentally became an attraction for tourists. 3. Vampire Cape If you're looking for something simple yet spooky, this Vampire Cape is a total classic. With it, your pup will be ready to transform into the dapper Dracula. It’s super easy to put on, lightweight, and doesn’t require measuring your pup to get the right size. 📸 Pet Shot Studios Content Tip: Pair the cape with some red lighting or a spooky backdrop to create a dramatic feel. One thing I like to do is create a persona out of the costume. Last year, I wore this cape and called myself "Count Dogula"—and even gave tips on posing like one! 4. Cowboy Hat and Bandana Yeehaw! If your pup is ready to ride into Halloween like a true outlaw, this Cowboy Hat and Bandana combo is all you need. The tiny hat stays on with an adjustable strap, and the scarf is perfect for pulling together the look. It’s low-effort but high on the cuteness scale—ideal for pups who won’t tolerate a full costume. This costume is also versatile, making it perfect for year-round wear, whether you’re visiting Palm Springs or Joshua Tree. Content Tip: Film your pup "trotting" through the yard or at a local park with intense background music as if your pup is having a standoff. Or a hilarious take of your pup "throwing" a lasso on your countertop or table to score some food. 5. Flounder from The Little Mermaid Want something totally unique? This Flounder Costume from The Little Mermaid is the perfect under-the-sea look. Bright, cheerful, and instantly recognizable, your pup will channel Disney vibes all day long. Just note: Choose this costume if your pup tolerates costumes and can move easily with one on. 📸 Pet Shot Studios Content Tip: Transform your living room into an "Under the Sea" set by adding some nautical-themed toys or, even better, fish-shaped plushies. A quick trip to the beach is perfect if you live near one. Let your pup chase the waves and dig in the sand for Flounder’s ideal beach day trip. 6. Bat Wing Harness These Bat Wings are all you need for a spooky yet simple look! They easily attach to your pup's harness, turning them into the cutest little creature of the night. This costume is lightweight, comfy, and totally Instagram-worthy with minimal effort. It's perfect for pups who don’t tolerate full costumes. Content Tip: Take your pup on a nice hike and capture the batdog in action. Let your pup run, climb on some rocks, and fly through the forest. For LA pups, I love visiting Runyon Canyon for an off-leash hike—it's the perfect place to capture your batdog on the trail while showcasing the LA skyline. Bonus Tip : Amazon's fast shipping saves the day with so many Halloween dog costumes to choose from! Running out of time? No problem! Amazon's fast shipping means you can still save your dog’s Halloween with just a click. Many of these costumes are also affordable and budget-friendly , so your pup can look their best without breaking the bank. - Snake Plants: Pros and Cons in Homes with Pets
Photo by Pet Shot Studios Creating a pet-friendly indoor garden is all about finding plants that are easy to care for and safe for pets. Snake plants, with their ability to clean the air and low need for attention, seem perfect at first glance. But there's a catch: they're not great for pets. My human hasn't had the best luck with plants, from struggling succulents to a 4-year-old saguaro cactus that didn't make it. Yet, these snake plants have been surprisingly tough. Let's unpack this a bit more, aiming to help other pet owners figure out how to keep us safe while still enjoying the perks of having a snake plant around. Pros and Cons Pros: Air Purification: Snake plants excel in stripping indoor air of toxins like formaldehyde and benzene, offering a breath of fresh air—literally. Low Maintenance: Ideal for the busy pet parent, they demand little attention and thrive on neglect, with minimal watering and light requirements. Aesthetic Appeal: Snake plants add a modern touch to any interior design scheme with their striking upright leaves. Cons: Toxicity Alert: When ingested, snake plants can cause nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea. The saponins they contain are responsible for these toxic effects. Potential for Chewing: Curious cats (and sometimes dogs) might find the leaves an enticing snack, risking their health. Making the Right Choice for Your Green Home Education First: Realize that no plant is 100% safe. Knowing the risks and keeping pets from making a salad out of your indoor garden is crucial. The ASPCA's comprehensive guide on plant toxicity is an indispensable tool for pet parents, so check it out here . Safety Over Style: Consider these pet-friendly alternatives that don't skimp on benefits or beauty: Money Tree: Thrives with minimal fuss and brings a touch of green luck into your home. Parlor Palm: Adds a lush, tropical feel without the worry for your furry friends. Rattlesnake Calathea: Its striking patterns are safe for pets and a feast for the eyes. For my friends living in LA, you can also check out KimThai Garden in Chinatown. They have a fantastic array of plants, and the owners are extremely friendly and knowledgeable. Don't even get me started with how good their head scratches are. Also, can we take a moment to appreciate these planters? Aside from the black schnauzer, aka a Calvin planter , Likha makes a variety of pet planters that look as cute as your pet. Likha is committed to creating sustainable, hand-crafted artisan products that benefit artists from the Philippines. Learn more and get your own pet planter here . Strategic Placement Is Key: Even with safer plants, placement matters. Keep potentially risky plants on high shelves or in pet-restricted areas. As a general rule of thumb, all our plants are placed on bookshelves, kitchen counters, and dining tables where my short legs couldn't climb. That might be trickier for cat owners because I have seen some climb trees at my local park. Behavioral Strategies Training: Teach pets to avoid plants from an early age. This can include using deterrents for initial training and positive reinforcement for avoiding plants. In my case, I was taught not to eat anything in a pot using my plant toy as a training tool. This is the same training I received when I was taught not to eat anything off an unattended plate. Provide Alternatives: Sometimes, pets chew on plants out of boredom or lack of stimulation. Offering chew toys or interactive and puzzle toys for dogs can redirect this behavior away from your indoor plants or favorite pair of shoes. Trust me, an antler chew saved all our furniture when I was teething. Fostering Harmony Between Pets and Plants Keep Watch: Always monitor your pets for signs of plant munching or related illnesses. Quick action can prevent more severe issues. Be Prepared: Keep your vet's contact information handy, along with a list of your indoor plants. It could be vital in an emergency. A pet-friendly indoor garden is about balancing your love for greenery with your responsibility towards us, your adorable but sometimes very naughty pets. With thoughtful choices and strategic care, you can enjoy the best of both worlds, ensuring your homes are safe havens for all inhabitants.
